Blue pebbled cloth binding with embossed cover designs, gold spine lettering and decorations. Binding is rubbed at its edges and a little scuffed on its covers; corners and spine ends are just starting to fray. Page block edges are darkened/smudged, and pages are spotted with occasional light foxing. Gift inscription in pencil (partly erased) on front free endpaper; owner's name in pencil on first blank page; no other markings. Binding is square, tight, and unfaded. ; Two New York boys visit their uncle in New Jersey. He answers their questions about such matters as the form of ancient books and writing instruments and the various translations of the Bible. B & W frontispiece shows the uncle pointing out to his nephews their mother's birthplace; there are three B & W maps and several B & W illustrations in the text. 1838 is copyright date; no publication date is given, but front free endpaper is dated 1865 in faint pencil. ; 16mo 6" - 7" tall; 263 pages
